What’s a Wölvhammer? Well for Minneapolis natives and heavy metal fans, its a local group, and here in Minnesnowta we love the hometown kids. Since the rumors started flying late last winter about a new winter boot from the locals at 45NRTH, we’ve anxiously awaited the arrival of what we now call the Wölvhammer.
Building on the success of similar boots, the Wölvhammer starts with an SPD compatible Vibram sole – whether you run flat pedals in the wintertime or clip in, this boot’s got you covered. Moving up from the sole, the Wölvhammer uses an aerogel based insole to resist the cold that can penetrate your boot soles or from icy metal cleats.
The boots upper is made of 1000 denier Cordura and a Sympatex membrane for waterproof breathability. Insulated with 200 grams of Thinsulate (Another cool innovation from the local folks at 3M!) and lined with fleece and “monster fur” we promise that no muppets were harmed in making the warmest riding shoe yet.
Lacing is a simple cinch lock and is easy to manipulate with cold fingers – maybe 45NRTH will do a riding glove next! For those of us who like to get off the beaten path, or for particularly snowy locations, you’ll notice a metal ring on the top of the toe box – this is specially designed for attaching a gaiter to your Wölvhammer’s to ensure that no snow gets down the boots.
Riding is fun anytime of year, and in Minnesota, not very many things stop because it turns cold and snowy. We don’t put our grills away for the winter and we’re certainly not putting the bike away either. So whether you picked up a new snow bike or are just looking to push that commute through the winter, grab a pair of these and get riding!
